BRINGING AFFORDABLE, HIGH QUALITY PANTOMIME AND SUMMER PLAYS TO THE PEOPLE OF CAMBERLEY,
FARNBOROUGH AND ALDERSHOT
ABOUT THE PLAYMAKERS
The Playmakers are an amateur dramatics group based in Mytchett, Surrey near to Camberley,
Farnbrough and Aldershot. We produce an annual pantomime towards the end of January
and a Summer Play, which is usually supported by a performance by The Young Playmakers,
towards the end of June.
Many of our productions are written by members of our own group, such as Just Desserts,
the summer play of 2012, which was written by Susan Freke and Fiona Wassan.
Other plays are taken from other authors’ work and adapted, such as Treasure Island
- The Panto, which was the pantomime put on in January 2013 and directed by Geoff
The group undertakes almost every aspect of the productions. We have members (or
associates) making the stage sets, the props, the costumes, the publicity and this
web site as well as writing, directing and producing. We have back stage crews and
Front of House teams. So if acting is not your scene (forgive the pun!!), but you’d
like to help out with any of the support activities, you would be very welcome and
would gain valuable experience. About the only activities where we get external
parties to work for us are the stage lighting, sound and videoing.
We rehearse at The Mytchett Centre every Monday evening (every other Monday for Young
Playmakers) except for the month of August. During the run up to the pantomime,
we also rehearse on Sundays.
Membership costs just £30 per year (pro-rated for new members), with concessionary
rates for full-time students and those over pension age who aren’t in full-time employment.
For ‘Young Playmakers’ aged less than 16, a parent or guardian is required to become
a full member and attend all rehearsals -see the Young Playmakers page for more
Our membership year runs to the end of March, when we hold our AGM. Subscriptions
become due after a four week trial period, as soon as you are cast in a production
or, for renewals, within one month of the AGM. New members joining part way through
a year can pay a pro-rata amount taking them to the end of the current year - the
Treasurer will provide full details on request.
If you are cast in a production, there may be a ‘show fee’, which is currently £5
Membership fees can be paid by cash or cheque direct to the Treasurer or on-line
using PayPal (note that you do not need to have a PayPal account in order to pay
Most productions are filmed and members have the option to purchase a DVD.
The group started in the mid 60’s, meeting in Victoria Hall in Ash. The first production
was called ‘Before the Flood’ and the first pantomime was ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’.
The move to the present location of The Mytchett Centre was made in 1987.
